Stanley Arms - Lancaster Road. This pub takes its name from the original owner, The Earl of Derby, whose family name was Stanley. The original pub was demolished in 1849 to make improvements to Church Street and was rebuilt in 1854 when these were finished.

The Stanley Arms brewed its own Bitter and Mild in a brewhouse at the rear of the pub until 1923 when the pub was sold and subsequently renamed the Knowsley Hotel, after the area in which the Derby Family lived. It was not until 1973 that the name the Stanley Arms was re-established.

Records show that the Reverend George Smith, lived on the premises in the 1870's and a picture of him at the Battle Of Rourkes Drift (South Africa - 1879) hung over the fireplace in the original pub for many years.
The 'New' Sumners was built in 1985 a few yards behind the old one.

Sun Hotel - Friargate. This pub marks the former town boundary and was the scene of skirmishes in defence of the town during the Civil War.
